City of Gettysburg History

Welcome to the City of Gettysburg, South Dakota!

A small community central to the state, Gettysburg is the county seat of Potter County. It is located 15 miles from the Missouri River and 58 miles from Pierre, the capitol city of South Dakota. The city was plotted in 1884 and incorporated in 1907. It covers 1.92 square miles at an elevation of 2064 feet.

Gettysburg is a tightly knit farming community with a population of approximately 1104. It is home to a nationally awarded school district, a newly built hospital, and many other fine services and amenities. Potter County offers many opportunities and activities of an agricultural and outdoor nature and a growing variety of other events and organizations to suit anyone's interests.
